Normally your immune system’s lymphocytes (white blood cells) travel to all parts of the body scanning the outside of proteins for chemical signatures. If it finds an invading protein, then the white blood cell returns to a lymph node where it becomes a plasma cell and generates antibodies to destroy that specific protein.
An allergy sufferer has a genetic defect that causes the white blood cells to misidentify protein and overreact to a foreign substance. If a person with a seafood allergy eats seafood, the white blood cells mistakenly think that the body is being invaded and produces many times more antibodies than are needed to fight the invaders.
Since there isn’t a real threat (and therefore nothing to attach to), over the next 7 to 10 days, the antibodies attach themselves to mast cells that store histamine. This is known as sensitizing to an allergen.
The next time your body is exposed to that allergen, a cascading allergic reaction occurs. During a cascading reaction all the antibodies are triggered and destroy all the mast cells they are attached to, thus releasing an abnormally large about of histamine causing runny nose, itchy skin and other symptoms.
What Happens During An Allergic Reaction?
The reaction is caused by excess amounts of histamine being released rapidly. Here are typical effects:
Histamine tries to protect the body by isolating the area with the allergen. Blood vessels shrink to reduce blood flow. This can cause drowsiness, unclear thinking and even organ failure.
As the cells and blood vessels shrink, the gaps they leave fill with fluid causing puffiness and soreness. This swelling can become severe enough to prevent sight, hearing, and breathing and make movement uncomfortable or impossible.
Skin contact with an allergen usually causes hives, itchiness and localized swelling.
Airborne allergen contact often makes breathing difficult as the throat and lungs contract. The lack of oxygen may cause drowsiness, make walking impossible, and can result in death.
The introduction of an allergen by way of blood often is the most severe. This can happen by a sting or food being digested. Blood can circulate throughout the body within 6 minutes, allowing the allergen to come in contact with all organs.
What Can You Do To Avoid A Reaction?
There are three things to help prevent an allergic reaction:
1. Avoidance. The first and most important step is avoidance of the allergen. The more exposure you have, the more likely you are to be sensitized and then have a more severe reaction. While it may be easy to avoid seafood, it isn’t for things like pollen. The following environmental things may help.
a. Air filtering. A good air filter will reduce the amount of airborne allergens.
b. If it is an airborne problem, wear a surgical mask while it is at its peak. The mask will filter out the majority of the pollen that would have been breathed in, thus reducing the effects of the allergen.
c. Remove carpets, keep furniture slightly away from walls and increase airflow. Carpets catch all sorts of allergens that can get stirred up each time you walk around. Moving furniture away from the walls allows air to move through the home. If air does not move freely, pockets of pollutants can build up in unused areas.
d. Make sure your vacuum and furnace have good filters. Vacuums pull up a lot of pollutants from the carpet, so be sure that they are all captured. The furnace is the primary defense against airborne allergens, since it is responsible for circulating air throughout the home.
2. Medication can greatly reduce the risk of allergic reaction as well as containing them. Antihistamines, decongestants, cromolyn sodium, corticosteroids and epinephrine are examples of things that may help. Allergy is the most common illness in the world. It is characterized by the immune system’s reaction to substances that are viewed by the body as potentially harmful. The body launches an attack on these substances which is manifested by the symptoms experienced in an allergy attack. There are many substances that can cause an allergic reaction. Among them are peanuts, shellfish, eggs, milk, dust, insect bites and pollen.
Also known as allergic rhinitis, hay fever is usually characterized by an allergic reaction to pollen. The illness is named after the “haying season” when pollen grains in the air are in abundance. Since pollen carried by the wind is the more popular culprit, you should be aware of the most common plants releasing these pollen grains in the air. Trees including birch, alder, hazel, hornbeam, horse chestnut, willow, poplar, plane, lime and olive cause hay fever. Among these, birch and olive pollen are the most dominant. On the other hand, grass pollen from rye and timothy are responsible for about 90% of the total hay fever cases.
Effects of hay fever vary form person to person. Some experience mild reactions while others suffer severe reactions. Symptoms of the illness include coughing, headache, itching nose, runny nose and sneezing. You might also experience impaired smelling functions and sensitivity to flavors. Your eyes will water from the irritation in your nose. Sore throat, wheezing and conjunctivitis are also common reactions.
Hay fever is usually diagnosed by determining the patient’s history of symptoms. Your doctor will ask you the frequency of your symptoms, severity and onset. Changes in your diet, exposure to pets and allergens as well as weather conditions will all be considered in the evaluation for hay fever. Skin testing is also performed to determine specific sensitivity to particular allergens. Any of these medications can relieve symptoms of hay fever effectively. Scientists have raised concerns that environmentally friendly washing cycles are not all “friendly” for Allergy sufferers. Korean researchers have found that low temperature washing cycles, “green” energy-efficient 30 or 40 degree celsius washes, only killed 6% of house dust mites compared with 100% at 60 degrees.
Washing clothes at 40 degrees compared with 60 degrees uses a third less energy, and many environmental groups, including Friends of the Earth, recommend even lower temperature washes, whilst switching from 40 to 30 degree washes saves a further 40% in energy costs. Many detergent manufacturers are also encouraging their customers to wash at lower temperatures by saying that their products still work just as well as at a higher temperature.
However, this recent Korean research suggests this may not be the case. At both 30 and 40 degree washes, using detergent and ‘enzymes’ designed to improve washing at low temperatures, only between 6.2% and 6.5% of house dust mites were destroyed. In addition, the low temperature washes fared badly against other allergens. Cotton sheets contaminated with dog dander - saliva and skin cells that are a common allergen in dog-owning homes - were also washed at 30, 40 and 60 degrees. At the two lower temperatures, more than 40% of the dander remained when the sheet was re-tested. At 60 degrees, just 12% remained.
For those who are just as concerned about the environment as their allergies, the researchers did find a way to still do their washing at lower temperatures without further affecting their health. They found that rinsing fabrics three or four times in cold water after washing at 30 degrees produced results comparable with a much hotter wash.
Lindsey McManus, from Allergy UK, agreed with the Korean study and said that Allergy sufferers should use a 60 degree wash. She said: “Sheets and clothes should definitely be washed at 60 degrees or more, and regularly, to get rid of house dust mite, and other allergens.”
John Bailey, from leading detergent manufacturer Proctor and Gamble, said that it wasn’t the mites themselves that were causing the allergic reaction, but their droppings. “House dust mite themselves pose no problems - it’s the protein contained in their faecal dropping that’s the allergen. Under European wash conditions, like other protein allergens, this is easily removed. All effective detergents are successful in removing protein allergens in a 30 or 40 degree wash cycle.”

There is no telling how old the mattress, carpets, chairs or curtains are in the room.Since it is not practical to take your own mattress and pillow with you, how do you make the room as dust mite proof as possible?
Start by packing a bottle of Alkaline Laboratories ADMS Spray in your suitcase. It comes in a quart bottle, so you can’t carry it in your carry-on luggage. Many of our clients pick up a small spray bottle from Walgreens or CVS and pour some in it. Pack the bottle and sprayer in your suitcase. It is a good idea to place the bottle in the gallon size zippered plastic bag just in case the security screeners are a little rough with the contents of your bag during the screening process.
You also want to pack at least 2 king sized zippered pillow encasements. Since you have no idea what size pillows will be on the bed in your room, by taking king sized covers, you know you will be prepared.
Upon arrival, take the pillow cases off the pillows and place the zippered pillow encasements on them. Unpack your ADMS Spray and begin with treating the bed. Spray the bedspread and dust ruffle with ADMS Spray. Turn back the bedspread and lightly spray the sheets and pillowcases.
Once the bed is treated, turn your attention to the other areas of the room. If the room has a musty smell, spray the ADMS spray into the intake area of the air conditioner. Also, be sure to spray the carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture. The ADMS Spray will work to rapidly deactivate the allergy causing proteins from dust mites, molds, pets, and pollen.
If your stay is extended, repeat this process at least once a week. As a matter of water and energy conservation, few hotels still change bed linens each day. Inquire as to how often the bedding is changed. You dont’t want them taking your encasings. Repeat the treatment after each bedding change.
You won’t have the perfect allergy proof bedroom like the one you have carefully created at your house, but you will have a reasonably allergy free home away from home.
